Engineers/ScientistsWe have talked to hundreds, if not thousands, of engineers and scientists thinking about taking the patent bar exam. Our very first class (in September 1993) included a number of engineers who were thinking about a career change to patent law and retirement options. Many engineers and scientists (and even medical doctors, pharmacists, etc.) take the patent bar exam, enter law school, join patent law firms, open their own practice, move into a legal department or take on the responsibilities of a patent liaison at their company. A patent agent can open a professional practice much like a doctor or dentist, psychologist, surveyor, professional engineer, etc. Many law firms and corporate legal departments hire patent agents to do patent work.
