The patent bar exam used to be given on specific dates, either once or twice per year at various points in time. The Patent Office has moved to a new system, which allows you to take the exam on a computer at a Thompson Prometric testing center. The test is by appointment. Most testing centers are open during business hours, and some have weekend and night hours.
There is no filing deadline for the patent bar exam offered by Prometric, applications are accepted and processed year-round.
Note that the patent office also gives a paper exam once per year, in Virginia. This is mainly for people who have trouble with the computer-administered, and only a small portion of applicants use this option. We recommend that you take the exam at a Prometric testing center.
